I was somewhere in rural Alabama, going to a Southeastern National Rendezvous. I stopped at a local supermarket to pick up some last-minute essentials. I was coming around the corner of an aisle on my way to check out, with a twelve-pack of essentials under each arm, as I turned the corner my feet just went out from under me. Down I go like a wet tent, my cargo of cans burst forth out of their boxes and ran free across the store floor. I grabbed my tricorn and, in as dignified a manner, as I could under the circumstances), picked up my cans, and made my way to the check outline. My mother Nancy had her mobcap on, a print dress and a fancy pocket pouch. As we were leaving, I overheard someone saying, “must be Mormons.” The use of heal plates is better for dirt, gravel, mud, clay, and dry grass. Using heel plates, you should also consider the use of hobnails. If you’re walking mainly on asphalt, when you are on man-made surfaces, go with all hobnails as they will lock in and hold you in one place. However, do not go on the wooden floor as the hobnails and or heel plates will tear up the floor. They extend the life of the sole the same way we use rubber now. The rubber sole came in the early 1900s. After thirty years of wearing leather shoes, I have my pair with ¾ soled stuff that looks just like leather.

Heel height: the height, floor to the shank, is measured at the heel breast.

The measure of heel height is from the breast (front) of the heel not

 the neck (back) of the heel. Elevation and heel height sets the heel angle for the heel seat.

The post Concord, Colonial shoe, Black Rough first appeared on Fugawee.]]> We named it the Concord in honor of  the heroes who left their homes and their wife-warm beds to gather at the Concord bridge and dare the British Empire to do its worst.

The toe of the Concord is slightly round, the dominate style shoes found at Ft. Ligonier. We took the pattern for the Franklin uppers and formed them over a last taken from an 1860’s military shoe. The Concord is available in rough or smooth finish.

Wonder about which to choose smooth or rough leather?  If you are in a group or unit, sometime it is decided along with the other clothing regulation what the unit will wear.  If it just for personal use, oft times it was a rough outside leaving the inside smooth as like a lining.  Then the rough leather would be filled with a mixture to fill the leather and after a lot of elbow grease you would get the not too shiny finish.  This also gave you added protection from moisture of the wet ground cover.  There has been many different concoctions for fillers over the years.

The smooth finish would give you the rough side for the inside and be more of a cushion and less elbow grease as the shine is already there.

The Cheri is our latest in the series of the Anna.  It has a brick red leather and the toe is more sloping than the first Anna.  It has 2 lace holes, one on each latchet, change the ribbon, add a large rosette or silk bow and you will be in early era.  A colored grosgrain ribbon will take you later in the 19th century , of course a black ribbon during the Civil War.  It still has the wider heel base, so walking on rough ground your heel won’t sink in easily.  Good also for every day dress and adds color to your outfits.  Deemed by costumers as the best style for Colonial looks.
